Two printers were stolen from a construction office in the 14700 block of South Road. The printers are valued at $1,000. No suspects were found.

A man stole a woman's purse from the 12200 block of Sag Harbor Court. The purse contained an electronic organizer, which the man's girlfriend agreed to pawn. The suspect's girlfriend was caught and arrested. The stolen item is valued at $100.

Someone stole a digital camera, Gateway computer, printer, jewelry and a credit card from the 11600 block of Laurel Valley. The stolen credit card was used at a Lake Worth store. No suspects were found.

AUTO BURGLARY

A wallet and fishing tackle box were stolen from a man's car in the 13300 block of Kingsbury Drive. The victim's car was locked and parked at his residence. No suspects were found.

The white-flowered tree, Cornus florida, was once prototypical of those forests and has inspired festivals across the East. But in recent years, its numbers have dwindled because of attack by the fungus Discula destructiva, which causes cankers to grow on the tree and its leaves to fall off.

During a previous study, one of the authors had noticed that in three patches of forest that had been ravaged by fire, the trees had fared better.

To follow up on this suspicion, they went into Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which spans Tennessee and North Carolina, and compared patches of forest that had been burned with patches that had been fire-free for the last few decades.

Patches that had been burned twice had four times the number of dogwood stems as those that had been burned only once, and 20 times as many as those that had not been burned at all.

That difference is probably because fungus thrives in damp, shaded habitatsd. When fires burn through an area, they open the forest up to light and air, allowing the dogwood to thrive with less threat of infection.

The findings were published in a recent issue of the journal Forest Ecology and Management.

"The Twelve Days of Christmas in Virginia" is full of illustrations, history and interesting facts about the commonwealth. The author and illustrator are very familiar with Virginia. FOR a couple of non-drinkers, it was strange to be stopping at a hotel steeped in the tradition of whisky making.

But you don't have to drink alcohol to appreciate the history of a place.

The Royal Terrace Hotel in Edinburgh values its roots immensely. The building, part of an impressive Georgian terrace, consists of seven townhouses, which originally were family homes for around 100 years.

It was known as Whisky Row, because resident merchants could look out of their windows and see their ships arriving at Leith. In 1861, John Crabbie, best known for his firm's ginger wine, moved into one of the houses and lived there until his death.

It is no surprise then that the hotel would want to maximise its links with the industry.

The luxurious rooms, named after whiskies or distilleries, are individually designed and display historical details about the whiskies.

Me and my husband settled in The Balvenie for our twonight stay, which, according to the pictures and scripts on the walls, dates back to the late 1800s.

The spacious room, with open fire, included all the mod cons but the decor was in keeping with the original period character.

A glass bathroom in the corner with thin, white curtains looked exquisite and we felt it was a real feature of room - until we had to relieve ourselves. If the glass was frosted or the curtains a little less transparent, it would have been perfect.

After a brief rest, we set out to explore the city. As the hotel is set on a hill, there are wonderful views of sexy lingerie china Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth. Towards the back, there are private gardens which provide a hidden retreat for guests as well as a setting for weddings.

The Royal Terrace is a 10-minute walk from the centre but there are also regular buses. The main attractions, including Edinburgh Castle, The Royal Mile and Princes Street are easily accessible.

We returned to the hotel for a relaxing evening, a swim in the small pool and a stint in the steam room.

Next was dinner in the stylish Terrace Brasserie restaurant. My food was delicious but my husband pinched a few parsnips off my plate as he felt his dinner needed more filling out. The starter was too light for him, and even with the main course, he was unsatisfied.

But our desserts were mouth-watering and looked too pretty to eat.

We retired for a peaceful night, the hotel offering a tranquil setting away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

We woke at leisure and enjoyed a hearty breakfast, my husband opting for vegetarian food, while I tucked into the full Scottish affair including the haggis.

Another day was spent enjoying the sights of Edinburgh before we made our way back home.

LIFE ON NGATI MARU HIGHWAY, SH26 The name: Ngati Maru is the iwi of the area. I t's less than 40km from Thames to Paeroa on State Highway 26 and for many travellers it's just the alternate route you take to the Coromandel Peninsula when the Kopu Bridge is jammed up.

But strung out along the pleasant drive beside the hills of the Coromandel Range are three distinct settlements, each with their own history, character and communities.

Once there were more settlements along the road - recently named the Ngati Maru Highway - but only the three have survived. Travelling from Thames, you strike Matatoki not far past the Kopu- Hikuai turn-off. And roughly opposite the Matatoki School, with its roll of 58 children, Iain Alexander plies his trade as a butcher in a little shop stocked with home-made products. sexy lingerie china

He's a local boy who joined his father in the shop in 1987. When he took over in 1996, he decided to do things differently. "When I first came here, it was a conventional butcher's shop and it just didn't work. Kelvin Haigh founded Matatoki Farm Cheese 15 years ago. It's now owned by the Waitui Kuratau Trust, which farms at the southern end of Lake Taupo. The trust bought the factory to make sheep milk products but its main lines are still organic cows' milk products.

The factory has a string of awards for its excellent products and a small cabinet displays some of them, from the Cuisine gold- medal winning cummin gouda to the silver- medal sheep milk pecorino and bronze- medal sheep and cow's milk fetas.
