Would-be rugby players try and

[ At 2010-5-4 By bolingseo   0 comments ]

A PROJECT to turn a group of disadvantaged young men into a competitive rugby team has already been expanded as the players progress with their training - and time-keeping.

The We Can project organised by Plymouth Albion and the Devonport Regeneration Community Partnership is aimed at people who have had difficulties such as unemployment and homelessness.

Launched in December, it aims to give eighteen men aged 17 to 24 a total of 80 hours of rugby links of london charms training before playing a match against an experienced local team. They will also have a chance to gain coaching and refereeing qualifications. The group has now grown to 20, and organiser Chris Perkins said the project is also likely to be lengthened.

He said the men, some of whom had not played rugby before, were making good progress.

"Time-keeping and timetabling have always been a problem, but after three weeks most of our lads are turning up at least 20 minutes before they start training kitted out and ready to start," Mr Perkins said.

"I would be lying if I said every one turned up at all sessions as the demands of their hectic lifestyle leave an easy opportunity for excuses but they are trying and at this time that's all we can ask.

"We need to impress that working as a team will achieve more than working alone, that showing respect and helping each other can at times of hardship get you through."

Mr Perkins said more players were turning up every week. Some have also dropped out, although it is hoped they may return.

He said: "Anybody who wants to come along is welcome; we won''t stop them. What it is doing is moulding them together and they are now getting a bit of confidence and a bit of respect for each other and, hopefully, it will go some way to making them employable again."

The team has been practising basic rugby skills and passing has already improved dramatically.

Mr Perkins said: "Scrummaging and lineouts are still things of the future and the maul is still a far-off mirage. But under head coach Dan Collier things are shaping up and the players respond to him.

"In a few weeks they will have their first warm-up game, hopefully putting into practice the things we hope they have learnt.

"Then they will need that friendship, trust, determination to take on the opposition."

Collier, an Albion lock and coach, said: "They are improving every week and their handling is getting better, and I reckon in about eight weeks time they''ll be able to try some contact rugby.

"I''m enjoying it as well and I''m Thomas sabo charms also around their age so I know how to approach them and work with them. So they look up to me and they are coming on well."

Wrapping up the Section VI wre

[ At 2010-5-4 By bolingseo   0 comments ]

Here are the Division I and Division II stories from the Section VI wrestling championship. And here are plenty of extras from the Division II meet Saturday night at Niagara County Community College. But first, a couple observations.

1. This was the second straight year NCCC served as host for the event, and Clip on charms it's a great venue. There's plenty of parking, and NCCC coach Eric Knuutilla (one of the nicest men you could ever meet) does a great job having the gym ready. The support staff, including announcers and officials, also do a good job of keeping everything moving as close to on time as possible.

2. Another thank you to Ross Conti, an assistant coach at Fredonia and committee member of the Wrestling Review of Western New York, the group that does such a great job seeding and ranking area wrestlers. Conti is a walking encyclopedia of wrestling knowledge.

112-pound champion Tom Page, Eden: Page moved ahead with a takedown in the second period to defeat teammate eighth-grade teammate Alex Smythe. Here's Page's father, also Tom Page, on what it's like for two teammates to wrestle each other: "It's extremely difficult because they're so familiar with each other's style. It's unfair to both, but some coaches say it's a privilege. I'm proud of both of the athletes, because they've done a fantastic job."

The elder Page said he wrestled both at 112 because they were the best at that weight class and deserved a chance to showcase what they could do at the sectional level. Nothing wrong with that logic.

119-pound champion Kevin Strong, Frewsburg: It's the second trip to states for Strong, who improved to 43-2 on the season. Here he is on his game plan from Saturday: "I was working on holding him down and taking it slow. Once I got my points I was very careful." Strong beat Newfane's David Ciaramella, 9-0.

125-pound champion Emory Rowe, Ripley: The smallest wrestling school in Western New York had two finalists, including one champion in Rowe. He scored a late takedown to earn a 5-3 decision over Jake Baer of Olean, a raw talent in just his third year of wrestling. Here's Rowe on the end of the match: "I was just looking for an opening and I saw him loosen up, so I dove for it and got it."

140-pound champion Devin Kramer, Depew: The Most Outstanding Wrestler of the meet scored three late points to break a 2-2 tie with Ben Haas of Salamanca and win his second sectional title (he won at 130 last year). The 130- and 140-pound divisions are packed with talented wrestlers. Kramer, a senior who is a member of the Cobra Wrestling Academy, is 36-4 on the season.

Thomas sabo charms 145-pound champion: Dominic Montesanti, Medina: Montesanti put forth a dominant performance despite being hampered by a knee injury. He's wrestling on a torn meniscus in his right knee. Here he is on competing hurt: "It's been a real bother, but it's my senior so I couldn't get surgery. It would put me out for the rest of the year. I have one last chance to be a state champion, so I have to tough it out."

Montesanti took sixth at the state tournament last year after dislocating his elbow and having to injury forfeit two matches at 140.

171-pound champion John Mistretta, Southwestern: Mistretta beat Greg Burroughs of Fredonia for the third time this season, never the easiest thing to do. Mistretta has a unique style that could make him a tough out at the state tournament.

189-pound champion Colin Palmer, East Aurora: Palmer is unbeaten on the season (24-0) after missing time early

WRIGHT ON!

[ At 2010-5-4 By bolingseo   0 comments ]

OWEN and Tyler Wright will make history today when they become the first brother/sister combination to surf in an ASP World Tour event together.

Fifteen-year-old Tyler grabbed the last spot in the women's draw when she took out the Trials yesterday, beating Australia's other rising star Laura Enever.

Big brother Owen is a tour rookie and will compete in his first tour event.

In the final of the women's race for a wildcard, Tyler beat out Dimity Stoyle, Sarah Mason and Merewether surfer Phillipa Anderson.

Ironically, Anderson's brother Craig will surf in the men's draw, meaning Tyler thwarted their chance to become the first brother/ sister combination.

Wright, who made history as the youngest ever winner of an ASP event at 14, was unaware of the feat until she hit the sand after the final.

"Someone told me straight after the final - I'm so happy with it. It's going to be sick," she said.

"I can't wait to see Owen surf. He is going so well, so it's going to be an inspiration to me."

Tyler Wright's admission to the women's draw strengthens what was already the strongest hand the Far North Coast has had in a professional event.

On top of the Wrights, Byron Bay's home-grown veteran Kieren Perrow, Lennox rookie Adam Melling and wildcard entrant Garrett Parkes of Byron will surf in the contest.

Never before has the Far North Coast had such strong representation and with young guns Melling, Wright and Parkes all in form, Perrow's mantle as our No 1 could come under fire.

A late inclusion, Parkes, who will surf in his first WCT event, has landed in a tough heat and will face world champion Mick Fanning in the opening round.

But the kid Clip on charms is hardly daunted by the task.

"I have nothing to lose," he said.

"My boards are great and I'm feeling good. I am comfortable on a right-hand point break, so I will just head out there and give it my best.

"If I could make it through the opening round I would be more than stoked."

The 2007 ISA world junior champion warmed up for the event by surfing his way through to the round of 16 at the Couran Cove pro junior last month but is sure to be spurred on by his chance to take on the big boys.

Meanwhile, Owen Wright warmed up for his tour debut with a third place behind Taj Burrow at the Burleigh Breaka Pro where he unleashed a series of his trademark aerials, and while Melling was outed in the round of 32, he is in peak fitness to make his mark.

Melling (ranked 33) and Wright (34) have landed in the final two heats of the draw.

Melling will face Aussie Dean Morrison and rising Brazilian star Jadson Andre in the opening heat, while Wright takes on Hawaiian veteran Fredrick Patacchia and fellow rookie Patrick Gudauskas of the United States.

World No 14 Perrow is the top seed in his heat and will attempt to surf his way past Aussie young guns Daniel Ross and Luke Munro to make a winning start to his sixth year on the tour.

In London, an unexpected tie t

[ At 2010-4-30 By bolingseo   0 comments ]

Editor,

replica tag heruer watches

I moved to England in the mid 1970s. I am a Londoner, having arrived here in 2001. It's a great city for the arts.

Recently, my girlfriend and I went to an exhibit of so-called primitive art: paintings, sculpture, bits of junk lovingly assembled. The gallery was in an elegant section of the city, near Primrose Hill, which overlooks the West End. The exhibition was eye- opening, to say the least. At every turn there replica breitling watches was something unexpected: Huge boards that someone had assembled from cast-off road signs; sculptures of men and women crafted from broken plates; a finely detailed city, built entirely of circuit boards.

The final room seemed to throw everything at us, the high walls crammed with paintings. I looked up at a flash of pink, white and black: an oil painting of the ice capades. I glanced at the name of the artist and suddenly I was swept back almost 50 years: Walking down Carbon Street in Weatherly, watching an old black van pass with a brightly painted tiger on the side, and a very old man selling his produce.

The name on the painting was Justin McCarthy, and seeing that name was a reminder to me of how friendly, light-hearted, and stimulating my childhood in Weatherly had been. I felt immense gratitude to him for having brightened our lives through his art.

Google plans to quit China

[ At 2010-4-29 By bolingseo   0 comments ]

Cyber attacks disclosed by Google and Adobe that may lead to Google quiting China highlight a sophisticated type of cyberspying that may be more widespread than previously thought.

Google, the world's top search engine, has threatened to shut down its Chinese site, Google.cn, after an attack on its infrastructure that it believed was primarily aimed at accessing the Google mail accounts of Chinese human rights activists.

Unlike ordinary viruses that are released into cyberspace and quickly spread from computer to computer, the type of Thomas sabo charms attack launched against Google and at least 20 other companies was likely handcrafted uniquely for each targeted organisation.

Such attacks, most often delivered using Adobe PDF documents sent by e-mail, secretly deposit a software file on a user's hard drive that allows the computer to be remotely accessed. Typically, top personnel with access to high-level information are targeted with such software, known as malware.

Since each organisation is hit with malware that looks different from that delivered to others, companies cannot detect samples spreading around the globe and protect themselves as they normally would.

"Attacks like this are very hard to block and very hard to filter," said Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer at security software maker F-Secure, who has been monitoring such attacks against Chinese human-rights activists since 2005.

The fact that this kind of malware can easily sit in computers undetected, potentially forever, also means the true number of such hacking attempts Clip on charms is hard to estimate.

"I don't think they're very unusual at all. I think they're very usual - that's the problem," says John Walker, a professor in cyber- crime at Nottingham Trent University and chief technology officer of security software adviser Secure-Bastion.

Google said it had found that at least 20 other companies had been targeted in attacks originating from China, and that it was in the process of notifying them.

Adobe, which makes the popular Acrobat, Flash and Photoshop software including the PDF format often used by hackers, said yesterday its computer network systems had been attacked, but no sensitive information was stolen.

Cyber security firm iDefense said that according to its sources, the attack on Google bore similarities to a July 2009 attack in which about 100 information technology-focused companies were targeted with e-mail campaigns using PDF files.

"It is possible that the two attacks are one and the same, and that the organisations targeted in Silicon Valley have been compromised since July," it said.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Google had briefed the White House prior to its announcement and that President Obama backed the right to internet freedom in China.
