A young boy named William has his bags packed, ready to visit his cousin, Madison, and Aunt Mary Jane. He is going to spend this Christmas vacation venturing around the great state of Virginia.

"The Twelve Days of Christmas in Virginia" is full of illustrations, history and interesting facts about the commonwealth. The author and illustrator are very familiar with Virginia. Author Sue Corbett and her family live in Newport News along the James River, while illustrator Henry Cole is a Virginia native, born and raised on a dairy farm.

Corbett uses the popular Christmas carol "The Twelve Days of Christmas" as the basis for the book. Though not necessarily related to Christmas, each verse contains something that is different and unique to Virginia. For example, a partridge in a pear tree replica tag heruer watches becomes a cardinal in a dogwood tree.

The journey begins in the Chesapeake Bay at First Landing State Park. They move around to Monticello, then mention some local goodies such as the Blue Ridge Mountains and The Crooked Road before heading to Mount Vernon.

"Christmas in Virginia" conveys the ways in which a child would view Virginia. Juxtaposed to the images and remixed verses are informative letters home from William. Although the letters are well written, it can come off a little like a grade-school history lesson taught by a 12-year-old, providing the option to use the book in the classroom. The reader will come away with some zany, interesting facts about the Old Dominion. links of london charms

A history of Whisky; WITH its

[ At 2010-5-10 By bolingseo   0 comments ]

Byline: SONIA SHARMA

FOR a couple of non-drinkers, it was strange to be stopping at a hotel steeped in the tradition of whisky making.

But you don't have to drink alcohol to appreciate the history of a place.

The Royal Terrace Hotel in Edinburgh values its roots immensely. The building, part of an impressive Georgian terrace, consists of seven townhouses, which originally were family homes for around 100 years.

It was known as Whisky Row, because resident merchants could look out of their windows and see their ships arriving at Leith. In 1861, John Crabbie, best known for his firm's ginger wine, moved into one of the houses and lived there until his death.

It is no surprise then that the hotel would want to maximise its links with the industry.

The luxurious rooms, named after whiskies or distilleries, are individually designed and display historical details about the whiskies.

Me and my husband settled in The Balvenie for our twonight stay, which, according to the pictures and scripts on the walls, dates back to the late 1800s.

The spacious room, with open fire, included all the mod cons but the decor was in keeping with the original period character.

A glass bathroom in the corner with thin, white curtains looked exquisite and we felt it was a real feature of room - until we had to relieve ourselves. If the glass was frosted or the curtains a little less transparent, it would have been perfect.

After a brief rest, we set out to explore the city. As the hotel is set on a hill, there are wonderful views of sexy lingerie china Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth. Towards the back, there are private gardens which provide a hidden retreat for guests as well as a setting for weddings.

The Royal Terrace is a 10-minute walk from the centre but there are also regular buses. The main attractions, including Edinburgh Castle, The Royal Mile and Princes Street are easily accessible.

We returned to the hotel for a relaxing evening, a swim in the small pool and a stint in the steam room.

Next was dinner in the stylish Terrace Brasserie restaurant. My food was delicious but my husband pinched a few parsnips off my plate as he felt his dinner needed more filling out. The starter was too light for him, and even with the main course, he was unsatisfied.

But our desserts were mouth-watering and looked too pretty to eat.

We retired for a peaceful night, the hotel offering a tranquil setting away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

We woke at leisure and enjoyed a hearty breakfast, my husband opting for vegetarian food, while I tucked into the full Scottish affair including the haggis.

Another day was spent enjoying the sights of Edinburgh before we made our way back home.

It was a lovely trip, both relaxing and educational. One thing's for sure - I now know more about whisky than anyone else in our household.

A highway full of rural pleasu

[ At 2010-5-10 By bolingseo   0 comments ]

A drive down the Ngati Maru Highway south of Thames is something special. Shenagh Gleeson travels the road with photographer Peter Drury.

--------------------

LIFE ON NGATI MARU HIGHWAY, SH26 The name: Ngati Maru is the iwi of the area. Matatoki means small adze or meteorite and is named after small flakes of hard rock made into adzes; Puriri takes its name from the native hardwood tree; Hikutaia means the tail of the taia (eel) or headwaters of a river at neap tide. Best coffee: Matatoki Farm Cheese cafe serves a decent flat white and some lovely muffins, along with platters and pizzas.

Best find: Rugby on TV at the Puriri Hotel in mid-winter and $1 bags of mixed lollies at Hikutaia General Store. Next weekend: You could attend Anzac Day services on Sunday in either Thames (dawn parade 6am, public parade 10am) or Paeroa (parade 9am, service at the War Memorial Hall at 9.15am).

--------------------

I t's less than 40km from Thames to Paeroa on State Highway 26 and for many travellers it's just the alternate route you take to the Coromandel Peninsula when the Kopu Bridge is jammed up.

But strung out along the pleasant drive beside the hills of the Coromandel Range are three distinct settlements, each with their own history, character and communities.

Once there were more settlements along the road - recently named the Ngati Maru Highway - but only the three have survived. Travelling from Thames, you strike Matatoki not far past the Kopu- Hikuai turn-off. And roughly opposite the Matatoki School, with its roll of 58 children, Iain Alexander plies his trade as a butcher in a little shop stocked with home-made products. sexy lingerie china

He's a local boy who joined his father in the shop in 1987. When he took over in 1996, he decided to do things differently. "When I first came here, it was a conventional butcher's shop and it just didn't work. There replica tag heruer watches had to be a reason for people to come out here, there had to be something special." He began making all his own products and developed a motto: "You have to taste to realise the difference".

Manuka-smoked bacon and his own ham were his first big successes and remain the main artery of the business but he now makes a wide range of products, including all sorts of sausages, salamis and smoked beef.

Iain's a lone operator and it's intense work but he enjoys it.

More people are coming to live in the area as farms along the hills are replaced by lifestyle blocks and residents commute as far as Auckland. There's also more passing traffic.

Next to his shop, the old dairy factory, once the heart of the Matatoki community, is again up for sale.

But further along the road another milk processor is very much alive and producing.

Kelvin Haigh founded Matatoki Farm Cheese 15 years ago. It's now owned by the Waitui Kuratau Trust, which farms at the southern end of Lake Taupo. The trust bought the factory to make sheep milk products but its main lines are still organic cows' milk products.

The factory has a string of awards for its excellent products and a small cabinet displays some of them, from the Cuisine gold- medal winning cummin gouda to the silver- medal sheep milk pecorino and bronze- medal sheep and cow's milk fetas.

Kelvin says the factory makes cheese the way our grandpar

Hat-trick for Kristian as Fran

[ At 2010-5-7 By bolingseo   0 comments ]

Wales Under-20s.....................43 France Under-20s .....................8 OSPREYS wing Kristian Phillips scorched in for a memorable hat-trick of tries as Wales Under-20s celebrated one of their best results at this level to smash France at the Arms Park yesterday afternoon.

The senior squad member also created two more of Wales's six touchdowns as Phil Davies's men claimed their biggest win over Les Bleus at any age group.

"It was a fantastic result for us," said Phillips. "It was great to score three tries, but it was a case of being in the right place at the right time. We were under a lot of pressure at times, but from 1 to 22 the boys got in their faces and scrapped for everything."

It was an impressive effort from the home side, who had an outstanding skipper in flanker Josh Navidi and an abrasive tight- head in Scarlet Simon Gardiner, who typified Wales's refusal to take a backward step.

But it will be Phillips who will grab all the headlines to provide further evidence of his blossoming talent.

Remarkably, Wales played most of the match with little possession or territory. Playing into a strong wind, the home side soaked up wave upon wave of pressure, particularly at scrum time, to lead 12- 3 at the break.

After just eight minutes Phillips showed why he is in the thoughts of national coach Warren Gatland by speeding away from three would-be tacklers to cross at the posts and then went on to have a major hand in the second.

A sublime offload out of the tackle from Phillips put Scarlets centre Scott Williams away 70 metres out. Williams still had plenty to do, but showing great pace and strength he replica hublot watches fended off two French defenders before diving in at the corner for a brilliant individual effort.

A mammoth penalty from fly-half Matthew Jarvis extended the lead 15 minutes after the break, before Phillips entered the fray again to create Wales's third try.

A touchline kick and chase from the Neath flyer had the French defence all at sea and even though he was tripped on the way to scoring, full-back Dan Fish followed up to touch down.

Phillips wasn't to be denied, though, and claimed his second after being gifted possession 30 metres out.

In an eventful finale, fellow wing James Loxton got into the act with an 80-metre interception, skipper Tanguy Molcard claimed a late consolation for France before man of the match Phillips claimed his hat-trick with the last move of the match.

A--Scouting Harvard: The Crimson hoped to challenge Cornell for the Ivy League title but were hammered by the Big Red earlier in the season and were then upset by Princeton. Led by Ivy player of the year candidate Jeremy Lin, Harvard knocked off Boston College earlier in the year and have hovered around No. 60 in the RPI rankings. Many feel that Harvard could get an at-large bid to the NCAA this year but the Crimson will certainly have to cap the league campaign with an impressive run to secure a bid.

A--Scouting Yale: Alex Zampier continues to struggle a bit with his outside shooting but scored 22 points last game to help the Bulldogs breeze past Columbia. Zampier went over the 1,000-point mark in that game and Yale got back to .500 in the league. Jordan Gibson and Paul Nelson replica breitling watches returned to the starting lineup last weekend and Yale split its weekend series.

HAT TRICK JOY FOR HODGSON! Vot

[ At 2010-5-7 By bolingseo   0 comments ]

Byline: CHRIS ROBERTS

A DOMINANT opening 40 minutes set the Giants on their way to an excellent second victory of their Super league XV season. It was the perfect response to last week's setback, also on the east coast at Hull FC, with Huddersfield producing the sort of rock-solid performance that had been at the Clip on charms heart of their 2009 success. Although hosts Hull KR finished last season just one place below the Giants in fourth, they were completely and utterly outplayed by the men from the Galpharm. And, even though David Hodgson deserves to hog the headlines with his well-taken hat trick, it was once again an excellent all-round team effort that made this stunning triumph possible. Six tries to nil clearly sums up the way in which Huddersfield bossed the contest from start to finish. But even though coach Nathan Brown will have been delighted to have seen his side run in half-a-dozen scores, it was probably the fact his side kept their hosts to zero that would have brought him the most cheer.

The Giants were obviously boosted ahead of the game by the return of inspirational captain Brett Hodgson after missing last week's narrow defeat at Hull with a back strain and Shaun Lunt, who was fit to continue after initial fears he had suffered a broken left wrist at the KC Stadium. But their last-minute preparations were still far from ideal, with heavy snow around the Huddersfield area making it touch and go as to whether all the players would dig themselves out of their houses in time to make it onto the team bus! As a result, their start to the contest was far from polished, with the home side setting the early pace. Only a great leap on his own line from Leroy Cudjoe after five minutes prevented Rovers from taking the lead after replica tag heruer watches five minutes, and then the Robins 'bombed' a good chance a minute later. But then, against the run of play, Man of Steel Hodgson began to take matters into his own hands. Camped deep inside his own half, the full-back collected the ball and launched an amazing 40-20 to instantly turn defence in attack. From the scrum, Darrell Griffin took the drive to the line and Lunt was quickly in at half-back to stroll through an enormous gap to touch down under the posts for Hodgson to convert.

Rovers did threaten to find a way back when, following a break from halfway, Michael Lawrence scrambled back well to deny Peter Fox in the corner. But from that moment on, the remainder of the half belonged solely to the Giants. Within three minutes of that scare, the visitors had doubled their lead. David Faiumu made good ground 40m out and fed Brett Hodgson, whose superb long, cut-out pass enabled namesake David to cross in the corner for his first try of the season. Hodgson then landed a magnificent touchline conversion, and Huddersfield were in control. And that was reinforced five minutes later with try No2. This time, Eorl Crabtree set the ball rolling, off-loading in heavy traffic on the Hull KR 40 for Larne Patrick to collect with his first touch since arriving from the substitutes' bench, and he showed remarkable speed to cut through and burst over full-back Ben Cockayne's attempt to tackle to dive over for a spectacular score. Hodgson once again goaled, and at 18-0, the home fans were already voicing their disapproval over the way their favourites were performing.

The boos could have been even louder had Lunt not just failed to collect a pass under heavy pressure on the Rovers' tryline in the last minute. But at 18-0, the Giants were more than happy with their opening 40 minutes' work. Rovers did start the second period with more purpose, forcing Nathan Brown's men to have to defend strongly early on. Huddersfield were able to relieve the pressure with long-range b

VOTERS MIGHT NOT STICK WITH GO

[ At 2010-5-5 By bolingseo   0 comments ]

WITH AN election looming, they aim to persuade us that they are rounded figures with the strength of character to lead the country. But as Gordon Brown and David Cameron prepare to trade sound bites in three televised debates, psychologists say the key to seeing who will do best is to reduce them to twodimensional stick men.

In a study, video clips of the Labour and Conservative leaders at the Commons Dispatch Box were transformed into moving stick images, with lines representing their arms and torsos.

The technique rendered the figures anonymous while emphasising their body language. Members of the public were shown the silent seven-second clips and asked to assess the qualities of the two speakers.

Mr Cameron's stick figure, propping itself up on one elbow while making sweeping gestures with its other arm, was rated more attractive than Mr Brown's, and with stronger leadership qualities.

The Prime Minister's stick man, repeatedly jabbing with its lower arm, came across as more anxious and depressed, and was perceived to be the more aggressive.

"The response that we got showed that people generally found Cameron's movement to be more attractive and healthy," said Robin Kramer, a neuroscientist at Bangor University, who led the research. It will be published in the April edition of the Quarterly Journal Thomas sabo charms of Experimental Psychology.

"They associated his movements with that of someone quite active and young. His stick figure came across as more gesturey, more comfortable, and more relaxed than Brown's. Brown's figure was less smooth. He appeared a bit more uncomfortable and perhaps a bit more aggressive. He came across as more static and stocky, and people seemed to associate him with someone a bit older."

Looking ahead to the election campaign, Mr Kramer added: "The body language of the party leaders will be put to the ultimate test during the live television debates and our research shows that looking and acting healthy and expressing that in your body language will be very important when it comes to people's perceptions."

Politicians have long been aware of the power of body language to manipulate public perception.

A 2006 study by Dr Peter Collett, a psychologist, compared their ability to mould their body language with that of poker players.

It found that most leading politicians had telltale hand gestures or facial expressions which indicated their true feelings.

Tony Blair was found to fiddle with his little finger whenever he felt anxious, and to touch his stomach when he felt threatened.

Bill Clinton was able to exploit his body language, biting his lip 15 times to appear emotional as he apologised for his affair with Monica Lewinsky, while George W Bush walked "like a body builder", as if his arms were pushed out by muscle bulk.

replica hublot watches King Henry VIII, Adolf Hitler and Margaret Thatcher all had their own ways of conveying power with posture and gesture, the study found.
