WOMEN are stuffing their handbags with more expensive items - such as iPods, mobile phones, and cameras - than ever before.

On average, it costs pounds 228 to replace stolen handbags and their contents but, as our table (below) shows, if you carry around new gizmos the figure soars.
According to new research by Churchill Insurance, 31 per cent of women have had their bag stolen on at least one occasion.
Research by travel insurance provider Preferential shows that while most women travelling on holiday select a cheaper bag to take with them, what they put LED Street Light LU04-112W in it can increase the value substantially, with MP3 players, makeup and sunglasses adding up to pounds 330 on average - and up to pounds 770 in some cases.
Preferential's managing director Steve Nickerson said: "Our standard advice to all travellers is - if it's expensive, don't carry it. Bag theft is an issue for all travellers, but especially for women. It is essential that the contents of handbags are fully protected."
Travel cover will protect while you're on your hols. But insurance cover for personal possessions taken outside the home can be arranged as an extension to your standard household contents insurance, to provide protection all the time in the UK or overseas.

Craig Allen, home insurance manager at More Than, said: "Young people in particular now carry more highvalue items around with them on a daily basis."
Premiums for personal possessions cover as an add-on to your home contents depends on individual circumstances. More Than, for example, gives pounds 1,500-worth of personal possessions cover for a typical annual premium of pounds 22.
Halifax Home Insurance and Churchill Insurance both offer a minimum of pounds 2,500 of personal belongings cover as an add-on for an average annual premium of pounds 40.
Norwich Union Direct's personal possessions cover limit starts from pounds 2,000 and the typical cost to add this on to your home insurance would be around pounds 30 a year.
